Move Well, Live Big This Summer

Ahhh, summer. The time of year where all of us Vancouverites take a giant sigh and have an extra skip in our step.

We made it. Kits Beach, here we come.

As temperatures rise and days lengthen, so do our lists of things to do, places to go, people to see.

One thing we're most proud of at TurF is the diversity on our studio schedule - whether you're training for a summer endurance event, exploring a new form of movement, or opting for something gentler to support where you're at physically and emotionally.

Our offerings are designed to elevate your relationship to movement, both on and off the mat.

Summer can ask a lot of our bodies.

We connected with Ange and Trilby to talk about how they're moving this season — and what it really means to be active in the summer.

What's your current relationship to movement in this season of your life? 

ANGE

How much I’m moving is staying the same, but what I'm doing is starting to shift. 

For me, this means making sure that I’m doing...
  • a strength based workout twice a week
  • getting to Body Werk every week for recovery
  • slowing down on my in-studio cardio workouts since I’m playing tennis, riding my bike and mainly taking my cardio outside.

I would say I am in the season of maintenance.

My relationship with movement has evolved a lot over the years, and right now I would describe it as pleasure-driven.

I put in a lot of time working hard in my 20s, and so my current practice is mostly focused on sustainability and moving in a way that honours longevity in my abilities versus optimizing.

I still like to punctuate my movement rituals with challenge — hill sprints, lifting to failure, but I like to think of this as microdosed intensity and effort within a generally playful routine.

What are your movement goals and aspirations for this summer?

Summer is such a high vibe time and even the sun setting so late in the Summer means I’m up later. 

One goal is that I have the energy to do everything I want to do and really take advantage of the beautiful weather. 

I’m also wondering how to improve my overall strength and fitness at a time that can be so busy - so focusing on consistency versus perfection.  I have movement goals for 6 days / week varying the style and type of movement and talking one full rest day.

Similar to Ange, I aspire to be outside as much as possible, soaking up these beautiful summer conditions.

Lots of outdoor soft runs (also known as runs that are slow, zone 2, emphasis on feeling grace versus intensity), and lots of beach time clambering on rocks.

I love taking my yoga-inspired practice to the beach, and adding on a long sunrise walk before teaching or before laying out to read by the ocean in the afternoon. I aspire to swim more, too.

Right now my post-run ocean dips don’t quite count, but I’m hopeful when things warm up a little I will be out there practicing my front crawl (a stroke I have yet to master but aspire to learn). 

Also — lots of dance!!! Saturday morning meta forever, plus I’ve been dipping my toes in some different modalities to explore moving in a novel way. 

What type of routine is helping you support that?

Early workouts are best for me

allowing me to free up my entire day and be open to last minute lawn hangs or tennis dates. 

I never miss a Strengthen Tuesday in the studio as it’s harder to get this quality and full-body workout outside of the studio (at least for me).

Meeting a friend for a class and then coffee is also helping keep the spirit of Summer while staying committed to my health goals.

I think that my abundance of steps each day helps keep me feeling good in my body and mind.

I teach full time so I get to classes less often than I used to, however Body Werk and Restore are huge components of what makes my running, meta practice and weightlifting sustainable.

It’s also been really supportive for the nervous system work that I’ve been doing.

I am using a lacrosse ball and foam roller daily to keep my tissues happy and to carve out time where I can feel embodied, calm and centered. I also love Mat Werk for supporting my balance and body awareness — these days, I am cueing (and therefore practicing) in a way that supports sustainability — simple yet interesting, supportive, conscious and effective!
