Goal setting – it's something most of us practice, whether we realize it or not. For some, goal setting involves a conscious practice of documentation (online or on paper), for others it's simply an acknowledgment, keeping them in the back of our mind. As humans, we are hardwired to be driven by goals – they provide us with guidance, purpose and something to strive for.
At TurF, we are goal-driven and put a big emphasis on supporting each other in activating what's possible. Creating, acting on and assessing a vision and goals plan is in our DNA – so we thought we would share the process that each and every staff member goes through – a process that helped bring TurF to life, too.
When it comes to creating goals, we go deeper – starting with defining our purpose. We ask ourselves: What lights me up? What do I do when no one is looking? What does my best day look like? We use this information to craft the goals needed to help us live a life of purpose. Ultimately, the goal in life is to do what you love, versus forcing yourself to struggle through something that doesn't work for you for 40,000+ days. Living with purpose means living a life fuelled by a greater vision, versus going through the motions and reacting to what life throws your way.
Your goals may change, but your values remain constant throughout your life. Your values support setting the right goals. Below is an exercise you can do to help define your values.
Your vision is a depiction of "a day in the life". Below is an exercise you can do to complete your vision.
You might be thinking – how the $#%^ will I know what I'm doing in 10 years!? Breathe easy – this exercise helps you take a birdseye look at your life based on your values and vision, and sets small, measurable goals to help you get there.
We recommend revisiting your goals to check in on your by when's, and evaluate if you should experience a big life change that could shift your perspective (moving cities, new relationship, new job etc.). Where you keep your vision + goals is up to you. At TurF, we have a goal wall featuring all of our respective vision + goals – this gives us daily visibility, and helps us support one another, too.
